Stripped room with exposed brick, a steel mesh panel, an aluminium stepladder by a window and buckets on a dusty floor

Stage 01 → 04

A renovation happens in four stages

  1. Stage 01: Before the first wall comes down

Measuring, pricing, sequencing and staying safe on ladders and towers: the part of a job that decides whether the rest goes well.

    3 courses · €539–€1,417

  2. Stage 02: Walls and ceilings

Partitions, plaster and paint: the surfaces everyone looks at, and the ones that show every shortcut.

    3 courses · €572–€852

  3. Stage 03: Floors, bathrooms and wet rooms

Screeds, waterproofing, tiles and planks: the work that has to be flat, dry and right first time.

    4 courses · €646–€921

  4. Stage 04: Outside the building

Insulated facades and pitched roofs, explained layer by layer so you know what a good job looks like.

    2 courses · €977–€1,058

Section A–A · shower wall and floor

What sits behind a good wall

A tiled shower is a build-up of layers, each with one job to do. Every layer is a place where a job can go wrong, and every one is filmed in one of the courses.

Schematic, not to scale. Select a number to open the course.
  1. Concrete slab or old floor

Surveyed for level, cracks and damp before anything goes on top. Dips found here are cheap; dips found under tiles are not.

    Screeds and Self-Levelling Floors €683

  2. Screed laid to falls

Thickest at the wall, thinnest at the drain, so water runs one way. A flat screed in a walk-in shower leaves puddles.

    Screeds and Self-Levelling Floors €683

  3. Primer

Goes on the dry screed so the next layer bonds instead of drying out on a dusty surface.

    Screeds and Self-Levelling Floors €683

  4. Metal studs and insulation

A frame that flexes cracks the tiles. Studs at the right centres, with noggins behind basins and fittings.

Plasterboard Partitions and Suspended Ceilings on Metal Studs €852

  5. Moisture-resistant board

Fixed at the right screw spacing. Ordinary board behind a shower softens the first time the membrane fails.

Plasterboard Partitions and Suspended Ceilings on Metal Studs €852

  6. Membrane and corner tape

One continuous layer from the floor up the wall, taped in the corner. It sits under the tile adhesive, never behind the board.

Waterproofing Showers and Wet Rooms €646

  7. Tile adhesive

Trowel notch chosen for the tile size, full contact under the tile. Hollow spots crack when weight goes on them.

Wall and Floor Tiling, from Setting Out to Grout €921

  8. Tiles, grout and silicone

Wall tiles stand on the floor tiles, with silicone, not grout, in the movement joint where wall meets floor.

Wall and Floor Tiling, from Setting Out to Grout €921

  9. Drain and falls

The membrane is bonded into the drain flange or collar. A gap here is the stain on the ceiling below six months later.

Waterproofing Showers and Wet Rooms €646

Faults we film close up

The common faults, filmed where they start, with the fix. Each card names the course that covers it.

  1. A worker on a ladder sands plasterboard ceiling joints with a pole sander

    F-01

    Cracked board joints

Joints lined up with the corners of a door opening and screws too far apart: the board layout is where the crack starts.

    Covered in
Plasterboard Partitions and Suspended Ceilings on Metal Studs €852

  2. A hand pushes a white paint roller over a grey wall

    F-02

    Roller lap marks

Rolling back into paint that has started to dry leaves a band you only see when low sun comes through the window.

    Covered in
Interior Painting: Preparation, Cutting In and Rolling €572

  3. A floor tile bedded onto combed adhesive with levelling clips

    F-03

    Tile lippage

One tile edge standing proud of the next: an uneven background, the wrong notch or large tiles laid without clips.

    Covered in
Wall and Floor Tiling, from Setting Out to Grout €921

  4. Laminate planks and a broom on a newly laid wood-effect floor in an empty room

    F-04

    Open plank joints

Planks not acclimatised, laid tight to the wall or over a floor that is not flat open up in the first dry winter.

    Covered in
Laying Laminate, Engineered Wood and Vinyl Planks €797

  5. Facade insulation boards with red anchor fixings behind a scaffold with timber boards

    F-05

    Render cracks at window corners

Without diagonal mesh patches at the corners of openings, cracks run out from the window at an angle.

    Covered in
External Wall Insulation (ETICS): Boards, Mesh and Render €1,058

  6. A man installs boards in a narrow bathroom with a stepladder, bucket and tiles on the floor

    F-06

    Leaks at the shower drain

Membrane not bonded to the drain collar, or no fall towards it: the water finds the gap the tiles hide.

    Covered in
Waterproofing Showers and Wet Rooms €646

Questions from site

Straight answers to what people ask before they buy. Anything else: contact us.

The chat in the bottom right corner is answered by a person.

Q-01 How do I get access after paying?

Your order page opens as soon as the payment goes through, and the access details arrive by email within one working day. The lessons are streamed online: there is nothing to install.

Q-02 How long can I watch?

20 months from the day your access starts, as often as you like within that time. The videos are streamed and cannot be downloaded.

Q-03 Is there a trainer who checks my work?

No. The courses are recorded and nobody watches, marks or signs off your work. You can ask us about the courses or your order in the chat or by email.

Q-04 Do I get a certificate or qualification?

No. There is no certificate, qualification, licence or card, and the courses do not replace any national certification your work requires.

Q-05 Does the scaffold course let me erect scaffolding?

No. It is an awareness course: it explains how to choose and check ladders, towers and scaffold. It does not qualify you to erect, alter or dismantle scaffolding, and it does not replace the training your employer or national rules require.

Q-06 Can I watch on site on my phone?

Yes. Any phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection works. The lessons stream, so on mobile data they use your own allowance.

Q-07 Can I cancel?

You have 14 days to withdraw, and that right lasts until your access starts. At checkout you ask for access to start straight away and confirm that you understand the right ends once it has started. Until then you can withdraw by writing to us. The full wording is in the Terms, withdrawal section.
